Abstract

This book, which is based on 15 months of ethnographic research in the city of Alto Hospicio in northern Chile, describes how its inhabitants use social networks and the effects on their daily lives. Nell Haynes argues that social networks are a place where residents of Alto Hospicio, or hospice, express their feelings of marginalization as a result of living in a city far from the national capital and with a notoriously low quality of life compared to other areas urban in Chile.

Abstract

This is a study of the relations between Britain and Chile during the Spanish American independence era (1806-1831). These relations were characterised by a dynamic, unpredictable, and changing nature, imperialism being only one and not the exclusive way to define them. The book explores how Britons and Chileans perceived each other from the perspective of cultural history, considering the consequences of these 'cultural encounters' for the subsequent nation-state building process in Chile. From 1806 to 1831 both British and Chilean 'state' and 'non-state' actors interacted across several different 'contact zones', and thereby configured this relationship in multiple ways. Although the extensive presence of 'non-state' actors (missionaries, seamen, educators and merchants) was a manifestation of the 'expansion' of British interests to Chile, they were not necessarily an expression of any British imperial policy. There were multiple attitudes, perceptions, representations and discourses by Chileans on the role played by Britain in the world, which changed depending on the circumstances. Likewise, for Britons, Chile was represented in multiple ways, the image of Chile acting as a pathway to other markets and destinations being the most remarkable. All these had repercussions in the early nation-building process in Chile.

Abstract

This book provides a political economy perspective on Chile’s contemporary economic development, explaining the different stages of Chile’s neoliberal pattern of economic integration into the global economy from 1973 to 2015. Three key explanatory variables are considered: the evolution of business-state relations, US geopolitical interest in the region through the waves of trade agreements, and the political impact of the dynamics of inflows and outflows of financial capital. Although Chile is typically considered to be a successful case of a free market economy, this book presents an alternative narrative of Chile’s growth through using a Latin American Structuralist political economy perspective. While it recognises the positive results in terms of growth, it also emphasises the lack of dynamic sources for long-term development, which embeds the economy into short-term booms followed by periods of stagnation.

Abstract

"Throughout the colonial period the Spanish crown made numerous unsuccessful attempts to conquer Araucanía, Chile's southern borderlands region. Contested Nation argues that with Chilean independence, Araucanía-because of its status as a separate nation-state-became essential to the territorial integrity of the new Chilean Republic. This book studies how Araucanía's indigenous inhabitants, the Mapuche, played a central role in the new Chilean state's pursuit of an expansionist policy that simultaneously exalted indigenous bravery while relegating the Mapuche to second-class citizenship. It also examines other subaltern groups, particularly bandits, who challenged the nation-state's monopoly on force and were thus regarded as criminals and enemies unfit for citizenship in Chilean society. Pilar M. Herr's work advances our understanding of early state formation in Chile by viewing this process through the lens of Chilean-Mapuche relations. She provides a thorough historical context and suggests that Araucanía was central to the process of post-independence nation building and territorial expansion in Chile"--

Abstract

"Internationally renowned essayist and cultural commentator Ilan Stavans spent five years traveling across a dozen countries in Latin America, in search of what defines the Jewish communities in the region, whose roots date back to Christopher Columbus's arrival. In the tradition of V.S. Naipaul's exploration of India, the Caribbean, and the Arab world, he came back with an extraordinarily vivid travelogue. Stavans talks to families of the desaparecidos in Buenos Aries, to 'Indian Jews,' and to people affiliated with neo-Nazi groups in Patagonia. He also visits Spain to understand the long-term effects of the Inquisition, the American Southwest habitat of 'secret Jews,' and Israel, where immigrants from Latin America have reshaped the Jewish state. Along the way, he looks for the proverbial 'seventh heaven,' which, according to the Talmud, out of proximity with the divine, the meaning of life in general, and Jewish life in particular, becomes clearer. The Seventh Heaven is a masterful work in Stavans's ongoing quest to find a convergence between the personal and the historical."
